A s I sat with my class watching them write to you

N egro they said, slowly, and then again in Spanish, they heard you say it Martin

L ooking at me I said, it was back, and a child finished, ah, back in the day-it was different

U glier, the pictures in black and white

T hrew bodies into walls with water cannons, they watched, incredulous

H ow did you go to school they asked me?

E veryday in third grade I got to go to the school where blacks once went, with Mrs. Peyton

R eally? They looked at me. Did you protest?

K inda I was nine. Like you. Watched the TV, learned, loved my teacher, she was a Negro.

Interesting the kids said and resumed talking about words that start with N.

N ice, I asked them, please don’t just say nice, but they all did. He was nice.

G iving me, their teacher, a smile. Yes, Martin was nice. And died for a day I could teach you.

Our Christmas Show

We just finished reading Dogzilla, a third grade story about this dog that terrorizes Mouseopolis.At the end of the story they suggested movie posters so we gave it a try.

Delightfully one of my students shared with me a song she wrote, for me. Her very first try at a song. Such is the stuff dreams are built on…she would like to be a singer.

One of the loveliest projects we did in November was studying the crow and learning about the art of the Northwest coast Pacific Indians, as we read “trickster tales.”

We will add the text when I can get all out typing finished at centers, here are the beautiful guides students chose to help them navigate their lives. Much wisdom from the natural world!

Hoping the third try is the charm, here are some wonderful prize winning turkeys designed by room 9 and 10 in the Art/ Yoga program classes. Something keeps me from posting, but here’s hoping that the Thanksgiving is a great one for all!
